This block grant provides seed funding to support junior faculty in initiating cancer research projects, enabling them to obtain preliminary results that will help them compete successfully for national research grants.

Eligibility: The Principal Investigator (PI) must have attained the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor, have a track record of mentoring junior investigators, have published, and have administrative/leadership experience.

Applicants must be prepared to implement/manage the IRG as outlined in the ACS Grant Instructions and ACS Grant Policies, including conducting career development activities for beginning investigators, assembling an IRG Committee to review/select the seed grant applications, establishing procedures for publicizing the seed grants and allocating the funds, and interacting with the local ACS chapter.

Budget: Total request is $360,000 over three years. IRGs can fund up to 3 one-year pilot grants at $40,000 each. (Note that neither the Principal Investigator (PI) nor any members of the IRG Committee are eligible to receive funds from these grants.)

USC may submit only one application to this program announcement.


Timeline for the FY 2025 ACS IRG competition:
•    USC Internal applications due by 5 pm October 31, 2024
•    Notification of review decisions and selection no later than January 10, 2025
•    Application deadline to ACS—April 1, 2025

Submission Process

Limited submissions MUST be coordinated with the Office of the Vice President for Research.

  • a two-page project abstract addressing key components/criteria for this specific grant program
    • Be sure to address the Program Description (see Page 20 of the ACS Grant Instructions) and how the PI is uniquely positioned to lead an IRG focused on the institution’s cancer research programs and leveraging resources to support cancer research.
  • a 2-3 page CV/biosketch for the PI (SCiENcv preferred)
