Maureen Ryan

Biography

Maureen Ryan (she/her) is a feminist media historian who researches and teaches classes on television, film, and digital media. She also currently serves as the Associate Director of UofSC's Humanities Collborative.
 
Her work explores how television and other forms of media have represented women's labor and everyday lives, the cultural politics of lifestyle media, and the history of television and digital platforms. She is the author of Lifestyle Media in American Culture: Gender, Class, and the Politics of Ordinariness (Routledge, 2018) and the co-editor, with Jessalynn Keller, of Emergent Feminisms: Complicating a Postfeminist Media Culture (Routledge, 2018). Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Communication InquiryFeminist Media Histories, and Television & New Media. She earned her PhD from Northwestern University in 2014.
 
She is at work on a book, A Cup of Ambition: Women at Work in 1980s and 1990s Broad Comedies, that explores women's work and labor politics as they are represented in American film.
