Background
William R. Hauk, Jr. is an associate professor in the Department of Economics at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. He joined the Moore School faculty in 2006 after completing his Ph.D. in Political Economics at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and earning a B.S. in International Economics from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.
Hauk currently serves as Academic Director for the One-Year MBA Program and Academic Director for the Professional MBA Program. He previously served as Undergraduate Program Director for the Department of Economics and has held numerous leadership roles across the Moore School and the university.
He has taught a wide array of courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral levels, including international trade, intermediate macroeconomics, managerial economics, global economics, and government policy toward business. He regularly teaches international trade in the Ph.D. program.
Hauk has been married to his wife, Eva Bogaerts‑Hauk, since 2006, and they have two sons, Joseph and Michael.
Research
Hauk’s research interests include international trade, political economy, and economic growth. His work examines how political institutions and economic incentives shape countries’ trade policies, development trajectories, and global economic integration.
His research has appeared in leading journals such as the Journal of Economic Growth, Economics and Politics, the Quarterly Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Macroeconomics, and the Journal of Comparative Economics, among others.
He has also written extensively for broader public audiences through contributions to The Conversation, where he has provided commentary on global trade, inflation, recessions, and U.S. economic policy.
