April 2026 Alumni Spotlight – Bryon K. Black, II, ’24

Dr. Bryon K. Black, ’24, (DMA, choral conducting) is currently Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choirs at DePauw University. We recently caught up with Bryon to ask him some questions about his time at the USC School of Music.

Why did you choose the USC School of Music?

I knew that the USC School of Music would help to build me into the career musician and educator that I wanted to be. The School also made the strongest impression on me during my application and search process during the unconventional times of the 2020 pandemic.

What person, course or experience was most influential for you while at the School of Music?

Dr. Alicia W. Walker was absolutely critical to my development and success –both during my graduate studies, and in my post-doctoral career. Her great intentionality, guidance, insistent advocacy, and genuine kindness played a significant role in giving me a positive experience during my studies.

How has your education at the USC School of Music helped you in your life and career?

My education in the School of Music played a role in strengthening my abilities in research, musicianship, collegiality, and coordination. I am consistently exercising skills in each of these areas in my work at DePauw University's Institute of Music.

What is one of your favorite memories, classes, professors or activities while attending the School of Music?

I will ALWAYS cherish the memories with my colleagues in the Choral Conducting graduate cohort. They have become dear colleagues and friends who made my experience truly a unique one. Every class, concert, conference, and run to Sweetwaters would not have been the same without them!

What advice would you give current students or recent graduates pursuing a music performance or music education career?

Make solid connections with your colleagues, professors, administrators, and members of the community. Cultivating key relationships will be vital both during and after your studies!

What is one of your proudest professional or personal accomplishments that occurred after graduating from the School of Music in which your education played a role?

Securing invitations to present my research for interest sessions in state, regional and national conference sessions for the American Choral Directors Association and the National Collegiate Choral Organization.

What ensembles were you a member of while at USC?

Concert Choir; Gamecock Chorale (formerly USC Men's Chorus); Graduate Vocal Ensemble

What is currently playing on repeat on your Spotify/Pandora/Apple Music, etc.?

I Hear the Music in the Air by Vickie Winans.

Please share any recent accomplishments, awards, major life events, etc.

My arrangement of the African American spiritual Hold On Just a Little While Longer was recently published by Hinshaw Music, in the Raymond Wise Choral Series.

Do you have any upcoming performances you may have scheduled?

April 19, 2026: DePauw University Spring Choral Concert, "Together, We Rise.” And on June 13, 2027: I will be conducting Rosephanye Powell's Gospel Trinity and a premiere work by Raymond Wise at Carnegie Hall, via MidAmerica Productions. (All singers welcome to join! Contact me for details.)
