Hassan Anderson

Hassan Anderson is a distinguished oboist, educator, and arts leader, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Oboe and Coordinator of Teaching Artistry at the University of South Carolina (USC). His career combines performance excellence, pedagogical innovation, and civic engagement, positioning him at the forefront of efforts to reimagine the role of musicians in modern society.

After a decade in New York City, Mr. Anderson established himself as a vibrant performer, collaborating with leading ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Gateways Festival Orchestra. A founding member and oboist of SHUFFLE Concert, he is recognized for genre-defying programming and an audience-focused approach to performance. His artistry appears on multiple recordings, including his latest release, Remembrances (May 2025), which features works by composer Trevor Weston.

A passionate advocate for teaching artistry, Mr. Anderson created the nation's first Bachelor of Music Performance degree with a Concentration in Teaching Artistry. Through this innovative program at USC, he addresses the urgent shortage of certified music educators by providing music performance majors with formal training in educational outreach, community engagement, and entrepreneurial skills. As Co-Founder of the USC Music Teaching Artist Certificate (MTAC), he has built statewide partnerships and led curriculum development to support the next generation of musician-educators.

Mr. Anderson is a former member of Sphinx LEAD Cohort 6. This prestigious national arts leadership program highlights his strong dedication to inclusive excellence and his bold vision of the arts as a catalyst for social change. Driven by a deep desire to lead, he advocates for the belief that all people, regardless of background, deserve access to high-quality musical enrichment. He works tirelessly to foster a cultural landscape where artistry and equity thrive together.

In fall 2024, his leadership was further demonstrated by organizing South Carolina’s first statewide Teaching Artist Forum, held in partnership with the South Carolina Arts Commission. This historic event brought together artists and educators committed to enhancing community impact through the arts.

His professional work is grounded in a commitment to integrative leadership, curricular innovation, and community building. He frequently serves as a consultant and speaker on arts education, orchestral leadership, and musical independence, with notable appearances at the League of American Orchestras, the Longy School of Music, and at national music-education conferences.

Motivated by a belief in music’s transformative power both on and off the stage, Mr. Anderson is dedicated to connecting performance and teaching to help musicians succeed as artists, educators, and community leaders.

At the core of his work is a strong belief in music’s transformative power, a force that lifts, connects, empowers, and ignites. In every space he occupies, Mr. Anderson reminds listeners of two enduring truths: that “A life in the arts is still a noble pursuit,” and that our shared goal must be to move classical music from the edges of people’s lives to the very heart, where it can inspire, heal, and renew.
